Inspired by both Hamlet and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, this book starts when 11-year-old Philip’s father dies in a car accident. Philip barely has time to process what’s happened when his father’s ghost appears to him. The accident was in fact a murder, and to put his father’s ghost at rest, Philip has less than three months to kill the murderer—his uncle, now the head of the family. Meanwhile, he’s still got school, friends, girls and his mother to contend with. But he can’t let his father down, right? Or is there no such thing as ghosts? Told through Philip’s voice, this is a fresh take on the Hamlet story, with some unexpected turns and a well-defined voice. Philip is still young and childish in many ways, but he grows up quickly during the course of events and is able to see more than the adults around him expect. Overall, it’s compelling, ambiguous, and more surprising than you might think.
