WEEK OF September 21, 2008

jcrumley.jpg The world of crime fiction lost one of its giants this week with the passing of James Crumley. Crumley's 1978 novel THE LAST GOOD KISS reinvented the American detective novel, and almost every American PI novel published since owes something to Crumley's work – as do more than a few international ones. Failing health dogged him in recent years, but he kept writing, publishing THE FINAL COUNTRY in 2001 and THE RIGHT MADNESS in 2005. His portrayals of the American West stand with the best of American literature, and his contribution to the genre is permanent. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family, and mourn his loss.

Our house is full this weekend, with some of our favorite visitors as well as some new friends. Before that, though, BRAD MELTZER will drop in for a fast and furious stock signing of THE BOOK OF LIES (Grand Central Publishing, $25.99), on Tuesday, September 23 around 2:15 p.m. Feel free to drop in and say hello, but know that he has to be out the door by 3:00 p.m.
