SEPTEMBER CRIME CLUB SELECTION

VOLK'S GAME and VOLK'S SHADOW established Russian agent and master criminal Alexei Volkovoy as one of crime fiction's most compelling series characters. We learn more about his history in this third entry, as Volk travels to the United States in an effort to clear his father's name. A 1950s-era cable is found in the pocket of a Hollywood director murdered in Moscow; the cable implicates Volk's father as a spy for the Americans at the height of the Cold War.

kentkrueger09.jpgheavenskeep.jpg Atria, $25.00

The Cork O'Connor series is one of the strongest in the genre, and William Kent Krueger is one of our favorite visitors. As this ninth book of the series begins, Cork O'Connor's wife, Jo, is on a charter plane that goes down over the Wyoming Rockies. Jo and all aboard are lost, presumed killed – but months later, two women come to Cork with evidence that the plane's pilot was not who he claimed to be, and that the flight's disappearance may also have been part of an elaborate deception.

The final book of Lawrence's beloved Roman Mysteries series finds Flavia and her friends on the road from Ephesus to Rome, when they hear of the death of the Emperor Titus. All of the questions and stories raised in this series' 16 previous books come to a head in this one – but each book stands alone as a thoroughly satisfying mystery, and THE MAN FROM POMEGRANATE STREET does as well.
