VAMPIREOLOGY: THE TRUE HISTORY OF THE FALLEN ONES by Archer Brookes, edited by Nick Holt. Candlewick, $19.99. All ages. I SO DON'T DO MAKEUP by Barrie Summy. Delacorte Press, $16.99. Ages 9–12. What's better than a sleepover? A sleepover with makeovers! Sherry and her friends have an awesome time with eye shadow, glitter, and more hair products than a salon. But when the girls wake up the next morning with serious skin issues, Sherry is freaked. Someone must have tampered with her makeup, and she is determined to get to the bottom of things. After all, she's a bit of a crime–solving celebrity (well, at least in the spirit world). Ghost academies around the world are impressed by Sherry's and her ghost mom's skills in the latest in this series.
PALACE BEAUTIFUL by Sarah DeFord Williams. Penguin, $16.99. Ages 9–12. When sisters Sadie and Zuzu Brooks move to Salt Lake City, they discover a secret room in the attic of their new house, with a sign that reads "Palace Beautiful" and containing an old journal. Along with their neighbor, Belladonna Desolation (real name: Kristin Smith), they take turns reading the story of a girl named Helen living during the flu epidemic of 1918. The journal ends with a tragedy that has a scary parallel to Sadie and Zuzu's lives, and the girls become obsessed with finding out what happened to Helen after the journal ends. 
BULLET POINT by Peter Abrahams. HarperCollins, $16.99. Young Adult. Wyatt's dad is a hardened criminal, a lifer in a prison somewhere on the other side of the state. When the economy tanked, the community had to cut the baseball program from Wyatt's high school, and Wyatt is at loose ends. Then Wyatt meets a crazy-hot girl named Greer with a criminal dad of her own who is, in fact, in jail with Wyatt's own criminal dad. Greer arranges a meeting, and Wyatt's dad is nothing like the guy he's imagined. He's suave, and smart, and funny, and cool, and – Wyatt's pretty sure – innocent. So Wyatt decides to help him out. 
MAX CASSIDY: ESCAPE FROM SHADOW ISLAND by Paul Adam. HarperCollins, $16.99. Young Adult. Only 14 years old, Max is the world's foremost escape artist. Chained, handcuffed, locked in an airtight water tank, there's nothing he can't get himself out of. LITTLE VAMPIRE WOMEN by Louisa May Alcott and Lynn Messina. HarperTeen, $8.99 (paperback original). Young Adult. "Christmas won't be Christmas without any corpses." The dear, sweet March sisters are back, and Marmee has told them to be good little women. Good little vampire women, that is. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy have grown up since you last read their tale, and now they have (much) longer lives and (much) more ravenous appetites. The girls must learn to get along with one another, help make society a better place, and avoid the vampire hunters who pose a constant threat to their existence. Plus, Laurie is dying to become a part of the March family, at any cost. Some things never change. This horrifying – and hilarious – retelling of a timeless American classic gets a thumbs–up from Linda and from MBS owner Pam W.!
WHITE CAT: THE CURSE WORKERS, BOOK 1 by Holly Black. Simon and Schuster, $17.99. Young Adult. Cassel comes from a family of curse workers – people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. Since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family.
